Please scroll down for English.

Seeing images of the art exhibit on the laptop screen, Halley’s eyes instantly lit up.

She immediately grabbed a pen and started to sketch what she saw. Witnessing Halley’s excitement and engagement reassured Melissa that she’d found the perfect internship program for Halley.

Halley is a Grade 10 student at Daystar Academy. And the picture she was looking at was taken at the Bairui Art Gallery, located in the Central Business District in Beijing, by Melissa Meltzer Warehall, Daystar Academy’s College Counsellor, when she and Michael Gonzalez, Internship Coordinator, visited the gallery on opening day of their current exhibition.

“It is necessary for our students to understand the place where they will intern. We will also visit the organizations ourselves beforehand to confirm they are the right fit for our students.” Melissa explained to us.

Arranged by Melissa and Michael, Halley will intern at the Bairui Art Gallery for four weeks during the coming summer holiday, where she will help prepare the gallery for

a Japanese art exhibition while learning how to plan and run an exhibition.

# Why this Summer? #

And not just Halley. Melissa and Michael have also arranged tailor made internship opportunities for quite a few more Grade 10 students.

Some of them will intern at the world’s leading food company, some will go to architectural design studios, and some will go to a company that organizes international sports events.

“Admissions officers pay special attention to students’ experiences during the summer breaks before they enter Grade 11 and 12. We offer summer internship program to help students discover their passions and strengths, as well as to provide ways for them to enhance their non-academic profiles that are an important part of their college applications, “Melissa said. She used to work at the University of Chicago, as an assistant director in the Office of College Admissions. She knows very well how university admissions offices in North America and Europe work, especially the selective and highly selective ones in the US and Canada.

When she graduated from the Northwestern University the acceptance rate then was more than 30%. But this year, it dropped to around 6%.

“You can imagine how fierce the competition is when it comes to college applications. Many people instinctively think that Chinese students are competing with Chinese students. However, that is not the case.

Chinese students are competing with all the applicants. And Our job at Daystar is to help equip and prepare our students to be competitive, both academically and interpersonally. Colleges have plenty of qualified applicants to choose from. We want Daystar students to stand out based on their experiences outside of the classroom, as well as based on their academic strengths. One strategy for doing so is to provide summer opportunities that align with their interests as a way to demonstrate to admissions committees that the student engages in such opportunities. Spending the summers before Grade 11 and Grade 12 doing something productive, whether that is an internship, caring for a relative or creating art, is an important application strategy,” Melissa said.

Internship Program – A Prerequisite for Graduating from Daystar Academy #

Participation in the Internship Program gives Daystar students a competitive edge in their college application. It is also the prerequisite for completing the Social Entrepreneurship Program and obtaining the high school diploma from Daystar Academy.

"Daystar Academy's Internship Program falls within the experiential learning aspect of our Social Entrepreneurship Program. Through personalized high-value internship placements tailored to interests and future aspirations, students have the opportunity to apply what they have learned in the classroom and refine their skills in an authentic context. " Jessica Heyman, Director of Teaching, Learning, and Innovation explained to us.

Just as a classical Chinese text says, “To know is better than to see. To do it is better than to know it. “Students achieve deeper and meaningful learning by actually doing it.

Now,the summer internship program is about to begin. How do the students feel about it? “They’re very excited! “Melissa cheerfully told us.

Something the Students Really Want#

They are excited and looking forward to it because these internship opportunities are based on their needs, interests, and abilities.

Daystar Academy strives to infuse attention to details and personalized support into the planning and implementation of every internship program. It took Melissa and Michael several months to plan and coordinate for the upcoming summer internship programs.

“From the beginning of the Grade 10 school year, I met with the students one on one every week to learn about how they are doing academically and what their interests are. I then set out to look for the best fit internship opportunities for the students.” Melissa said.

Once the host organization is identified, there is still a huge amount of specific work to be done. Michael will visit every one of these organizations and talk with the person in charge in more detail regarding the internship program. “We need to oversee the quality of the internship program. Each student has a mentor within the organization for guidance and has his or her own work plan and tasks. You can’t just go through the motions with the internship program. Students will have to give their best. They will need to do homework. And by the end of the program, they are expected to come up with a culminating project that includes self-reflection,” Michael remarked.

From the planning to the implementation of each and every one of the internship programs, our college counselor and TLI team will come together and work closely to support our students through a fulfilling and rewarding period of time.

Over the summer, we will follow the students who participate in the internship program and share their stories. Stay tuned!
